Linkuadro's display is the state of the art in black-and-white e-paper technology: nowhere in the world is there better quality in this category. Colour e-paper technology doesn't achieve the same realism, so it cannot reproduce the same printed-paper effect.

Technical deep dive: why black and white truly renders gradients
From a technical standpoint, the difference concerns the informational structure of the single pixel: in Linkuadro's display each individual pixel can exist in 16 distinct physical states. There is a white state and a black state; between these two extremes there are 14 real intermediate levels, creating a tonal scale divided into 16 physical steps. Each state represents a precise amount of black pigment visible against the white background. This means the pixel has internal tonal depth: when a shadow or a gradual transition is rendered, the passage from light to dark happens progressively and structurally. The gradation is real.
How does a colour display behave instead?
Here each pixel can exist in a limited number of colours: black, white, red, yellow, green, blue. Each pixel can only be in one of these states. There are no internal variations of the colour: there is no lighter red, no softened blue, no intermediate green. The pixel has no internal modulation, only a discrete chromatic variety.
If the colours are fixed, how do intermediate shades arise?
The solution adopted is spatial dithering: pixels of different colours are alternated in a given distribution and the human eye, taking in the whole, visually integrates the pattern and perceives an intermediate shade. For example, alternating red and yellow is perceived as orange; alternating red and white simulates a lighter red. Yet this shade does not exist in the single pixel: it is an effect emerging from the spatial distribution. The consequences can be visible screening, less fluid transitions, possible posterization. The gradient is not structural, but reconstructed.
For this reason, colour e-paper displays mainly show photos with marked, Van Gogh-style brushstrokes. Linkuadro chooses to prioritise internal tonal depth per pixel over chromatic variety.
